Hokubei Budogu x Shinbu Budogu: Bringing Japan's Best Shinai to American Kendo

Hokubei Budogu x Shinbu Budogu: Bringing Japan's Best Shinai to American Kendo

When we started Hokubei Budogu, shinai were the foundation. Our logo is literally formed from the kanji for shinai. It is not a coincidence — it is a statement of what we believe: good shinai, good kendo.

That belief is what drove us to partner with **Shinbu Budogu** in Japan. And it is what makes this partnership matter for every kendoka training in North America today.

Why Shinai First

A shinai is not just a training tool. It is the extension of your technique, your intention, and your daily keiko. The weight distribution, the grip profile, the bamboo quality — all of it shapes how you strike, how you move, and how your kendo develops over time.

That is why we have always been selective about which shinai we carry. We train with what we sell. We know the difference between a shinai that holds up through hard practice and one that does not. Shinbu Budogu's shinai have earned their place in our collection because they consistently deliver.

A Careful Selection of The Shinbu Shinai Lineup

Through our partnership with Shinbu Budogu, we carry a range of SSP-approved shinai sourced directly from Japan. Each one is built for a specific style of practitioner and a specific feel on the floor.

Shiro is our most popular practice shinai — a Keichiku option built for daily keiko. Durable, reliable, and a genuine step above the entry-level options flooding the market.

Kanshin is a Madake Koto shinai for practitioners who want the feel of high-quality bamboo in a balanced, refined package. Customer reviews have called it "super balanced," "highly refined," and a personal favorite for bouts.

Onimaru offers a Madake Koto with a thick grip — a meaningful choice for kendoka who prefer more presence in the hand and a heavier feel through the swing.

Yaetsurugi is a Madake Koto in Hakkaku Koban profile — the octagonal cross-section that gives a distinct feel and is favored by practitioners who want something different from the standard round grip.

Kabutowari is a Keichiku Dobari shinai — the dobari profile puts more weight toward the monouchi, which suits kendoka who prefer a forward-weighted strike.

Enbu is our Madake Koto option designed specifically for women, with sizing and balance tailored accordingly.

Every shinai in this lineup is SSP-approved and sourced directly from Shinbu Budogu in Japan.

What This Partnership Changes

Before this partnership, getting consistent access to quality Japanese shinai in the U.S. meant navigating unreliable import channels, long wait times, and limited selection. Many practitioners settled for what was available rather than what was right for their kendo.

Working directly with Shinbu Budogu changes that. We have a reliable, trusted source for shinai that we have personally tested and stand behind. When you ask us which shinai fits your grip, your style, or your budget, we are not guessing. We know these products because we use them.

For dojos and clubs, this also means more consistent supply when you are equipping multiple members or replacing worn equipment across a season.

Good Shinai, Good Kendo

This is what we are here for. Not just to sell equipment, but to make sure the kendo community in North America has access to the tools that real training demands.

The partnership with Shinbu Budogu is a direct extension of that mission. We are proud to carry their shinai, and we are committed to helping every kendoka — beginner or advanced — find the right one for their practice.

Happy Keiko.
